Some holidays are measured in stars.

Others are measured in sunsets you actually stopped to watch, conversations that lasted longer than planned, and the strange feeling that your shoulders dropped somewhere around day two.

Lost Soles Lodge sits directly on the shoreline of Jambiani, where the Indian Ocean rewrites the view twice a day and the village carries on exactly as it always has.

This isn't a version of Zanzibar built for tourists.

It's Zanzibar itself.

The Ocean Doesn't Do Repeats

The Ocean Doesn't Do Repeats

Most hotels promise an ocean view. We promise that it won't look the same twice.

At high tide, the Indian Ocean reaches the edge of the property. A few hours later it quietly steps away, revealing the reef, the fishermen and the seaweed farmers walking home. Life here follows the moon, not the marketing department.

Every pair has a story

ChatGPT Image Jun 29, 2026, 02_29_45 PM.png

During Covid, the owners fell in love, packed up their lives and moved to Zanzibar in search of something simpler.

Not long after arriving, they noticed something curious.

Every morning, the tide would deliver another collection of lost flip-flops and worn-out soles onto the beach. No one knew exactly where they had come from. They had simply travelled the Indian Ocean until they found a new home.

One pair became two. Two became twenty. Before long, collecting them had become a ritual.

Today, those lost soles have become one of the most photographed features of our bar — a colourful reminder that sometimes the best journeys don't go according to plan.

If you're walking along the beach and happen to find another lost sole, we'd love you to bring it home.

Who knows where it's been before it found us?

Village Life

You're not watching Zanzibar. You're living inside it. You'll hear children walking to school.

You'll hear the call to prayer. You'll hear neighbours greeting each other across the road.  You'll hear music that wasn't there yesterday. Around here, life isn't something happening outside the gates. It's part of your holiday.

Life on the island has a different relationship with time. Plans change. Conversations take longer than expected. Some days there's fresh tuna. Some days there isn't.

You'll hear a phrase often here. It's less a saying than a way of life:

Haraka haina baraka.

(Hurry has no blessing)

If you need everything to happen exactly on schedule, Zanzibar might frustrate you. If you're ready to let the island set the pace, you'll probably leave wondering why you ever lived any other way.

The sun has a habit of teasing you out of bed before your alarm ever gets the chance. Coffee tastes better overlooking the Indian Ocean, and somehow the shades of blue keep changing just enough to make you look up one more time.

Three steps take you from the beachfront pool to the beach. Long lunches become lazy afternoons in the shade. Sunset arrives with a cocktail in the sunken restaurant, before the fire is lit and stories begin to drift as easily as the tide.

This isn't fine dining. It's fine timing.

The best thing on the menu might be the view.

Coffee at sunrise. A cocktail by the pool. Fresh seafood when the fishermen have been lucky.

The food is honest, the cocktails are cold, and whether you choose the sunken restaurant, the pool deck, the beach beneath the fig trees or a table overlooking the Indian Ocean, you're never far from the reason you came.

Around here, meals aren't rushed. They're simply another excuse to spend a little longer watching the tide.

Food tastes better when nobody's in a hurry.

The Team

The Faces You'll Remember

Long after you've forgotten your room number, you'll probably remember the people. The coffee that's already being poured before you ask. The smile that welcomes you back from the beach. The conversation that somehow becomes the highlight of your evening.

Hospitality isn't a department here. It's the personality of the place.

Asante sana

(Thank you very much)
